Most influential lawyers 2022

15 Jul 22

Congratulations to our own Frazer Barton and all those that made the NZ Lawyer list of Most Influential Lawyers. NZ Lawyer said that “High-level legal acumen and cultural competence are the traits that distinguish this year’s group of outstanding lawyers.”

Frazer is recognised in the Changemakers category and has been an agent of change within the legal sector over many years. For six years, he was chair of the Anderson Lloyd partnership where he strongly championed diversity, equity and inclusion. This led to Anderson Lloyd having the highest proportion of women equity partners in a major firm in New Zealand.

Frazer was also highly influential in the firm’s achievement of carbon-zero status and becoming a living wage-accredited employer. He has appeared at all levels of the law, from District Court to Privy Council and Supreme Court. He has been involved in a number of landmark cases, including a recent Mercury High Court judgment overturning a decision of the Waitangi Tribunal, which granted land in the takiwā (area) of the firm’s iwi client to an iwi with no mana whenua (land rights). This case involved complex issues concerning the Treaty of Waitangi and tikanga (culture).

Frazer has held numerous governance roles including South Island vice president and member of the Board of the New Zealand Law Society, University of Otago Council and chair of Presbyterian Support. He has been on the faculty of the NZLS Litigation Skills Programme since 1995, teaching courtroom skills to junior practitioners in addition to being a mentor and supporter of future leaders.
