Geoff heads Anderson Lloyd’s Banking & Finance team. He has particular expertise in project, acquisition, corporate, structured and property finance transactions.

Geoff acts regularly for international and domestic banks, financial institutions and borrowers/issuers on high profile transactions across a range of sectors. He also provides general banking and finance advice, including advising on debt restructuring and insolvency and financial services regulatory issues.

Geoff has practised for 30 years in Auckland, London and Sydney, and became a law firm partner in 2004.

Geoff is recognised as a leading New Zealand lawyer in banking and finance and/or project finance by the most recent editions of Chambers & Partners (Asia Pacific), The Legal 500 (Asia Pacific), IFLR 1000, Who’s Who Legal and Best Lawyers. Best Lawyers (2020 edition) awarded him ‘Lawyer of the Year for Banking and Finance Law (Auckland)’.

Chambers & Partners (Asia Pacific)’s 2023 Edition reports that clients have praised Geoff as “an extremely good lawyer, with a very outcome-focused approach. He understands the issues from the get-go and always delivers.” Previous editions have stated that clients have described Geoff as “a very experienced banking lawyer who is always effective at getting the deal done, and is responsive and calm under pressure”, and that peers report “he is a strong, technical and user-friendly lawyer”.

Legal 500 (Asia Pacific) has noted that Geoff is “a leading figure in the NZ banking market and clients have 100% confidence in his advice”, and that he is a “pragmatic dealmaker” and “an excellent operator who has worked exceptionally hard to establish a finance practice on a par with the largest players in the market”.

Geoff is a member of the NZ organising committee, and the Chair of the NZ Documentation Working Group, of the Asia Pacific Loan Market Association, and a member of the Banking and Financial Services Law Association, the Institute of Finance Professionals New Zealand and the New Zealand Private Capital Association Inc.
