Highlights
Toitū net carbonzero
Anderson Lloyd is proud to be one of New Zealand’s first law firms to achieve Toitū net carbonzero certification, in line with international best practice. Through the Toitū Envirocare certification programme, we have established a clear framework to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint.
Renewable Energy and Climate Change Projects
Our firm is at the forefront of advising on renewable energy projects, including wind, solar, and Cleantech. We are one of only 6 New Zealand firms ranked in the Legal 500 Green Guide.
Sustainability Accreditation in Supplier Procurement
We require sustainability accreditation as part of our supplier procurement processes to ensure that our operations align with environmentally responsible practices. A notable outcome of this policy is our switch to Ecotricity, a renewable energy supplier, further reducing the firm’s environmental footprint.
Investing in Technology to Minimise Business Travel
We minimise business travel where possible, promoting alternatives such as video conferencing and other digital collaboration tools. We also provide business-related individual carbon footprint information to our staff, fostering awareness and personal responsibility for environmental impact.
Providing Community Days for Staff Engagement
As part of our commitment to giving back, we offer Community Days to staff, encouraging active participation in local environmental and social initiatives. These Community Days help to fostering employee engagement and community stewardship.
Engaging in Industry-Wide Sustainability Initiatives
Anderson Lloyd is a proud member of the Sustainable Business Council, the Climate Leaders Coalition (via our CEO Richard Greenaway) and the NZ Green Building Council, collaborating with other industry leaders to drive meaningful change.
In-House Sustainability Committees
Anderson Lloyd actively promotes sustainable behaviour within our offices. We have a sustainability committee in each office, fostering tangible changes in office practices and encouraging employee engagement in emission reduction efforts.
Partnering to Offset Carbon and Promote Green Investment
We are committed to the development of commercial structures that offset carbon emissions and foster sustainable investment. By partnering with key organisations, we help drive forward green initiatives that support both environmental sustainability and long-term economic growth.
Reducing our CHG Footprint
Anderson Lloyd’s base year for reporting our emissions was 2019. The emissions for that year was 299 tCO2e.
Our audited emissions for the year ended 31 March 2024 was 155. Part of this decrease is due to a change in methodology by the certifiers for calculating the emissions. We continue with our emission reduction plans with decreases from 2023 and base year.
As part of the Climate Leaders Coalition our goal is to have no more than 1.5 degree warming by 2030 reducing our emissions by 42%.

Restoring Local Biodiversity through Trees That Count
In our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, we annually fund the planting of 2,000 native trees through Trees That Count, managed by Project Crimson. Since 2009, Anderson Lloyd has funded over 12,000 native trees through Trees That Count. Trees That Count report that 12,001 trees will help to remove about 2,731 tonnes of carbon dioxide from our atmosphere over 50 years.
This initiative helps restore local biodiversity and contributes to the long-term health of New Zealand’s native ecosystems.
