Te Reo Māori and our Cultural Intelligence (CQ) Programme

Through our partnership with NAIA, a whānau-owned company focused on Māori engagement, we have developed a tailored Cultural Intelligence (CQ) Programme. This programme is designed to deepen our understanding of te ao Māori and guide appropriate engagement in both business and cultural contexts.

Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāi Tahu Internships

Through our partnership with Ngāti Kahungunu, we offer an ongoing internship programme that provides rangatahi with valuable work experience and insights into the legal field. We also maintain strong relationships with Ngāi Tahu, offering two summer internships as part of our broader internship programme, supporting the development of future legal leaders from both iwi

AL in Schools

We have developed and implemented a school scholarship/mentoring programme (Rangatahi Mana Ako – Anderson Lloyd in Schools) which focuses on disadvantaged students to improve their career prospects including work experience at our offices.

Living Wage Employer

In 2019, Anderson Lloyd became one of the first large New Zealand law firms to be certified as a Living Wage Employer, setting a benchmark for the industry. We actively support Sweat with Pride. Over the past four years, our firm has raised over $40,000 to support life-changing projects for Rainbow Communities.

As part of this we are supportive of our people to include their pronouns on their email signatures, to demonstrate their support and aroha for our Rainbow Communities.

Pro Bono work

Anderson Lloyd believes pro bono service is an essential element of every solicitor’s professional responsibility.

In FY24 we provided pro bono legal services totalling over 953 hours annually to a variety of organisations to assist them in improving our communities, be that environmentally, socially or culturally.

Maia Health Partnership

Founded in 2015, the Māia Health Foundation is a health charity dedicated to improving the lives of Cantabrians through exceptional healthcare are a charitable foundation that invests in the future health of Canterbury.

Surfing for Farmers (Kakanui Legends programme)

Anderson Lloyd is pleased to once again be a Local Legend sponsor for this year’s Kakanui Surfing for Farmers season.

This annual initiative aims to boost farmer mental health and foster relationships with gear, lessons and kai provided. Farmers from across 28 locations throughout Aotearoa will don wetsuits and hit the water for a well-earned break and some fun in the surf.

Women You Can Bank On

Anderson Lloyd has been a partner of this event since 2019. Held in Ōtepoti Dunedin the event is committed to fostering workplace diversity and inclusion, with a strong focus on female leadership and support. We are proud to be a Major Sponsor of WYCBO, which supports and inspires women.

This year’s theme of ‘Revolutionising the Future of Health’ provided a forum to discuss health advancements and innovative ways of thinking have the ability to profoundly change health care going forward.

Off Centre Arts Festival

Anderson Lloyd once again sponsored the Off-Centre festival in Christchurch to celebrate the restoration of Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre.

Anderson Lloyd was a Performance Sponsor, specifically funding the Buskers Programme. Busking provides fun and accessible family entertainment including magic, gymnastics, clowns, balloons and other compelling acts.

Off Centre included more than 50 events and 250 local artists who took to the stage from around Aotearoa. A jam-packed programme offered something for everyone, from kid’s activities, street performance, circus, spoken word, theatre, dance, through to classical music, local bands, and some well-known names in the New Zealand music industry.

Sweat with Pride

Everyone involved is challenged to sweat for at least 21 minutes a day during the month of June, with the chance to get active and raise money to support our Rainbow communities.

The month-long Sweat with Pride challenge ran for the month of June. The event is run by the Burnett Foundation Aotearoa (formerly the New Zealand AIDS Foundation).

We had 82 Sweaty Bettys taking part from Anderson Lloyd this year. It is great to see the support for this event across the firm with lots of exercise, fundraising and donating as well as office yoga and sprint sessions.

This is the fourth year that Anderson Lloyd has taken part, overall raising more than $40,000. The funds raised go towards funding life changing projects that will improve the mental and physical health of Aotearoa’s Rainbow communities.

Kindness Collective Foundation - PJ Project

Each year the team at Anderson Lloyd stock up on winter woollies in support of the Kindness Collective Foundation PJ Project.

The PJ Project has one simple aim – to help keep kids warm in winter! Over 143,700 kids are living in poverty which means 1 in 8 children go without the basics, including food, shelter and warmth.

Thanks to donations from generous Kiwis, the foundation has delivered 14,094 pairs of pyjamas to 170 different services around the country. Anderson Lloyd are pleased to contribute to this fantastic initiative.

Donations to Charitable Partners

Anderson Lloyd continues the tradition of donating to food banks instead of spending money on Christmas gifts and cards. The recipient organisations operate in the communities in which Anderson Lloyd works. Donations go to Auckland City Mission, Presbyterian Support Otago, Salvation Army Queenstown, and Christchurch City Mission. The firm also ‘Adopts a Family’ at Christmas through the forenamed charities by providing gifts and food supplies to families in need.

The firm also supports a number of causes throughout the year which include Ronald McDonald House, The Cancer Society, New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation and the Otago Medical Research Foundation.

Volunteering

Anderson Lloyd introduced one day community leave in 2018 for all Partners and staff to use for a cause they feel passionate about within their community. In FY24 we supported and encouraged 48 staff in the use of their community leave day.

Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust

Anderson Lloyd were pleased to be able to assist our client Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust with pro bono work.

The Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust is a distinguished not-for-profit conservation organisation that holds a significant position in the preservation of the endangered species. With its crucial conservation initiatives, the Trust aims not only to protect the Yellow-eyed Penguin but also to contribute to the broader ecosystem conservation efforts. The Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust is acknowledged as a Key Programme Partner by both the Department of Conservation and Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu for its exceptional efforts in safeguarding the hoiho.

Breast Cancer Cure

Anderson Lloyd are pleased to be able to assist our client Breast Cancer Cure on a pro bono basis.

Breast Cancer Cure stands at the forefront of the battle against breast cancer in New Zealand. Through collaborations and partnerships, they champion research initiatives aimed at enhancing outcomes for individuals facing breast cancer diagnoses. Their core mission revolves around empowering researchers, recognising that their ground-breaking work is pivotal in advancing our comprehension of breast cancer.

Anderson Lloyd are proud to support Breast Cancer Cure and their current fundraising campaign ‘Tees for a Cure’. This fundraiser aims to raise crucial funds that fuel vital research initiatives aimed at combating breast cancer.

Kai Commitment

Anderson Lloyd are proud to have been able to provide legal advice on a pro bono basis in establishment of the Kai Commitment.

Kai Commitment is a voluntary industry initiative to reduce food waste, with the aim of reducing emissions from food waste and emissions across the whole supply chain. The initial signatories are Fonterra, Countdown, Goodman Fielder, Silver Fern Farms, Foodstuffs and Nestle.

Dunedin Symphony Orchestra

At Anderson Lloyd, we understand the important role the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra (DSO) plays in bringing the community together and promoting the arts. We’re proud to support their mission through our pro bono work.

Since 1966, the DSO has been a key part of cultural life in Dunedin and its surrounding areas. With almost 60 years of history, the DSO has delivered outstanding performances, featuring orchestral masterpieces led by renowned conductors and soloists from around the world and New Zealand.

Anderson Lloyd has supported the DSO since 2001. Our partnership with the DSO covers various areas, and we’re dedicated to supporting efforts that make these cultural experiences more accessible. Working with the DSO fits perfectly with our commitment to giving back to the communities we serve.

Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust

Anderson Lloyd has long supported the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust as a founding sponsor and through pro bono work.

The Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust was formed in 2001. It is a non-profit charitable organisation that works with landowners, agencies, runanga, sponsors, and the wider community to promote the conservation and enhancement of indigenous biodiversity and sustainable land management on Banks Peninsula.

Protection for Te Waikoropupū Springs

Anderson Lloyd are proud to have assisted co-applicants, Ngāti Tama Ki Te Waipounamu Trust and Andrew Yuill, in their successful application for a Water Conservation Order (WCO) over Te Waikoropupū Springs.

Te Waikoropupū springs are also known as ‘Pupu Springs’ and are located in Golden Bay, Tasman. The iconic Te Waikoropupū Springs are the largest freshwater puna (springs) in New Zealand. It is a registered Wāhi tapū (sacred place), a taongā tuku iho (treasured resource), and is listed as a Water of National Importance for biodiversity. The water is some of the clearest in the world, and its outstanding clarity is attributed to the underground aquifer that supplies the Springs.
