Kapuni Wind Farm and Green Hydrogen Project
We are proud to have advised as lead sponsor counsel on the Kapuni Wind Farm and Green Hydrogen Project, which has now reached financial close — a major milestone for one of New Zealand’s most complex renewable energy developments.
Kapuni is the first project in New Zealand to integrate utility‑scale wind generation, industrial renewable electricity supply and large‑scale green hydrogen production. Once operational, the project will generate around 100 GWh of renewable electricity annually through four 6.4 MW Vestas turbines, and produce up to two tonnes of green hydrogen per day via a 5 MW electrolyser. This integrated system will support decarbonisation across transport, industry, agriculture and the wider energy system.
Anderson Lloyd has supported the project since 2018, with Partners Anton Trixl and Geoff Busch leading a team across a wide range of disciplines, to help to bring this project to this milestone.
The project is led by Hiringa Energy in partnership with Ballance Agri‑Nutrients, Nova Energy, Parininihi ki Waitōtara Incorporation (PKW) and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Westpac New Zealand is providing non‑recourse project financing.
Construction activities will commence this month, with renewable electricity and green hydrogen production expected in 2027.
Congratulations to all involved on reaching this important milestone. It has been a privilege to support a project that demonstrates the power of partnership and innovation in shaping New Zealand’s low‑emissions future.
